How to get married in Costa Rica?

Getting legally married in Costa Rica is a simple and straightforward process — especially with the right guidance. Whether you’re a local couple or planning a destination wedding, here’s what you’ll typically need:

  1. Valid passports for both partners

  2. A sworn statement of single civil status

  3. Completion of a legal questionnaire before the ceremony

  4. A licensed Costa Rican lawyer or notary to officiate and file the marriage

Once the ceremony is complete, your marriage will be registered with the Civil Registry of Costa Rica. You’ll receive an official marriage certificate that can be used internationally.
